The company boasts 27.1 mpg in its 2012 model year vehicles, an increase of 2.1 miles per gallon over the 2011 models. According to the report, it is the second largest increase in the industry.

Mazda reached these record numbers through its award-winning SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY, which provides an affordable alternative for those shopping for a new car.

“While other manufacturers have turned their attention to hybrids and electric cars, we chose to focus on perfecting the base technology used in more than 90 percent of the cars and SUVs sold today: the internal combustion engine. Through analyzing and refining this technology, as well as every other component in a modern automobile, Mazda has been able to achieve class-leading fuel economy in nearly every segment it competes in, and bring that technology – at an affordable price – to every customer,” said Jim O’Sullivan, Mazda North American Operations president and CEO.

Talks of a Mazda6 Crossover

The new 2014 Mazda6 has yet to even begin selling and already people are going crazy for it. Not to mention Mazda itself can barely get over the design, so much that they are in the talks of creating a crossover vehicle based off of the same platform that the 2014 Mazda6 was built on.

The program manager for the Mazda6, Hiroshi Kajiyama, stated that Mazda plans to create the crossover model, and that it could be done very easily. Though he said that they don’t want it to seem like any other crossover currently being produced, they want it to fit into a niche that they lacking with other vehicles. The plan would be to make the crossover a fun to drive, speedy SUV, similar to that of the BMW X series, fitting into the Mazda “Zoom-Zoom” idea.

Kajiyama then went on to state that though there has been talks of creating a two-door coupe version of the 2014 Mazda6, a crossover model would more likely to take place than the coupe.

Mazda plans to focus much of its attention on the launch of the new sedan and will worry about new models or extensions after the launch depending on demand.
