Three Mazda 2014 Models Receive Top Safety Ratings

As you drive in your 2014 Mazda3, Mazda6, or CX-5 from Bakersfield Mazda, rest assured that your vehicle is tested and proven to keep you safe wherever you go. These three vehicles were awarded with “Top Safety Pick+” distinctions by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

Mazda 2014 Models

In a year with new, more stringent criteria, three of Mazda 2014 Models were among only 22 to earn the title of “Top Safety Pick+”, giving Mazda’s brand the second-highest number of safety honors in the industry.

The automaker attributes much of this success to its exclusive SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY, which strives to optimize fuel-efficient performance of the gasoline engine.

“A redesign is not simply a matter of changing a vehicle’s sheet metal draping but involves dramatically altering its insides, outsides and everything in between to make that vehicle not only look great but be more efficient, more powerful and, most importantly, safer,” said Jim O’Sullivan, president and CEO for Mazda North American Operations.

“With our new fleet of SKYACTIV vehicles, the 2014 Mazda3, Mazda6 and CX-5 were created to be the best in their segments from fuel economy and safety to dynamics and performance, and having earned Top Safety Pick+ distinctions is further proof to their success.”

Mazda plans to implement SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY in each of its new models.

So sit back and relax, knowing you can enjoy a nice, safe ride in Mazda 2014 models.

Mazda’s Rotary Engine May Get a New Mission in the Mazda2

2013 Mazda2Mazda has a new prototype in the works as the company experiments with hybrid technology and California’s rigid zero-emission requirements.

Though Mazda’s new CEO, Masamichi Kogai, originally stated future production of Mazda’s rotary engine would remain halted, that same rotary engine is now being used to transform the Mazda2 hatchback into an extended-range hybrid.

For now, Mazda is calling it the Rotary Engine Range Extender, or RE Range Extender for short.

There are still no plans at the moment to enter this vehicle into production, but as engineers continue to “tinker” with the technology, its benefits may prove worthy of pulling the rotary engine out of retirement.

The RE Range Extender is powered with an electric motor. A 0.33-liter rotary engine uses fuel to recharge a lithium-ion battery. With the modified engine, the RE Range Enxtender could see a range of 248 miles, twice that of the current all-electric Mazda2.

“We are the first and only manufacturer to commercialize the rotary engine,” Kogai told Automotive News in regard to the company’s decision to hang on to the rotary engine even without current plans to continue its use. “In that respect we have some responsibility.”

Based on the present possibilities resulting from Mazda engineers’ tinkering, the rotary engine could become a more valuable option in the near future. We at Bakersfield Mazda will wait with you to see what the automaker decides to do.

Mazda Gives Consumers the Best Fuel Efficiency Cars in the Industry

In the recently released United States Environmental Protection Agency fuel economy report for cars and light trucks, Mazda was recognized for having a fleet of the most fuel efficient vehicles on the market.

Best Fuel Efficiency

Creating the Best Fuel Efficiency vehciles, Mazda’s adjusted fleet-wide numbers ranked highest in mpg performance and lowest in CO2 emissions.

The company boasts 27.1 mpg in its 2012 model year vehicles, an increase of 2.1 miles per gallon over the 2011 models. According to the report, it is the second largest increase in the industry.

CO2 emissions were reported at 328, the lowest in the industry.

Mazda reached these record numbers through its award-winning SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY, which provides an affordable alternative for those shopping for a new car.

“While other manufacturers have turned their attention to hybrids and electric cars, we chose to focus on perfecting the base technology used in more than 90 percent of the cars and SUVs sold today: the internal combustion engine. Through analyzing and refining this technology, as well as every other component in a modern automobile, Mazda has been able to achieve class-leading fuel economy in nearly every segment it competes in, and bring that technology – at an affordable price – to every customer,” said Jim O’Sullivan, Mazda North American Operations president and CEO.

Mazda Car Technology Earns Mazda6 Popular Mechanic’s ‘Car of the Year’ Award

Mazda6 Car of the Year

The 2014 Mazda6 was named Popular Mechanics’ “ Car of the Year ” and for very good reason.

The Mazda6 ties a neat bow on a well put together package. Its innovative technology makes it possible for the highest safety ratings, the latest in available infotainment features, its sleek styling with bold curves, the practical cabin and its fun-to-drive performance with fuel efficiency reaching up to 40 mpg on the highway to be rolled into one dynamic vehicle.

With retail pricing starting just under $22,000 including the destination fee, how could the 2014 Mazda6 be named anything but “Car of the Year”?

Admittedly, we might be just a teensy bit biased; so don’t just take our word for it. Here’s what Jim Meigs, Popular Mechanics’ editor-in-chief had to say:

“At Popular Mechanics, we love it when bold engineering and great design come together. The Mazda6 really impressed us with how well it delivers so many things modern car owners want: great mileage, fun road-handling, upscale features and looks—and remarkable value.”

Do you believe us now? Stop by Bakersfield Mazda today to see for yourself all the “ Car of the Year ” has to offer.

Warning: Stopped Traffic This Week on Highway 178

Stopped TrafficIf you’re one of those people who likes to jump out of bed at the last minute, dress in 15 and grab breakfast in two, you may want to revise your morning schedule for this week. From Nov. 12 until Nov. 15, electrical crews will be working on Highway 178 creating Stopped Traffic.

We hate that Bakersfield Mazda has to be the bearer of bad news, but we thought it best to give you a warning: You may want to wake up a few minutes earlier to account for traffic delays.

Construction workers are expected to manually stop and direct traffic as a temporary power line is hung across the highway near City in the Hills.

Crews will be working diligently between 6:00 am and 4:00 pm.

If you know of an alternate route for your commute, more power to you. Maybe you’ll get to stay in bed until 7:29 am after all and avoid the Stopped Traffic.

Thankful for Our Mazda Awards and Accomplishments

‘Tis the season to be thankful. And at Bakersfield Mazda, we have oh so many reasons. Here is just a sampling of our many Mazda Awards, highlights and successes so far in 2013.

Lauren of Glen Ellyn, Illinois, is happily cruising in her new 2013 Mazda3. With her purchase a few weeks ago, she became the proud owner of both her first new car and Mazda’s 10 millionth vehicle sold in the U.S. It was a momentous day neither she nor we will forget.

Mazda’s 2014 Mazda6 received an “Advanced” safety score, the highest rating in new tests administered by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Mazda’s new i-ActivSense driver-assistance technology secured Mazda’s top 20 finish among a test class of 74 vehicles.

Of course, we’re excited about the new Mazdas models we have to offer you, but we always enjoy looking back at some of our older, trusty models as well. Two celebrities are holding tight to their Mazdas with history. Alfred Morris, starting running back for the Washington Redskins still drives his 1991 Mazda 626, although it recently underwent a reconstructive surgery. Down-to-earth Game of Thrones writer, George R. R. Martin, prefers his Mazda RX-7.

As we reflect during this Thanksgiving month, we can’t help but be grateful for a successful year. With two months left, we can’t wait to see what other accomplishments we’ll be able to add to the list before 2014.

1991 Mazda 626 Gets a Makeover Fit for an NFL Player

Football_field_02While Alfred Morris was busy on the field working as a starting running back for the Washington Redskins, DC-area Mazda engineers were spending 275-man-hours remodeling his car.

So what car does the NFL player drive that would take 275 hours to restore? A 1991 Mazda 626 named Bentley, which he bought during college from his pastor for $2.

Morris was loaned a 2014 Mazda6 in exchange for his 1991 Mazda 626 with his Florida Atlantic University parking decal (which expired last year) still in the rear window. Sounds like a pretty smart trade on Morris’s part, but what was Mazda thinking?

No, there isn’t something in the water over there on the east coast. The exchange was an inventive public relations move as the restoration process, dubbed the Alfred Morris project, was recorded.

By the time Morris was given back the keys to his car, Bentley had undergone a heavy duty makeover inside. Fitting in light of its name, the car received leather seats with quilted, cross-stitching. A new audio system complete with a touchscreen was another of several updates the car received.

You could say this is one purchase that paid for itself.

We don’t have any tricked out 1991 Mazda 626s left in our inventory here at Bakersfield Mazda. We do, however, have other models that share some of the same great features we think you’ll enjoy, including the 2014 Mazda6.
