The Dangers of Texting While Driving

We all know that texting while driving is dangerous, yet many of us continue to do it. July is recognized as National Cell Phone Courtesy Month, so be courteous to your fellow drivers by not texting and driving. And, just to drive the point home, here are a few deadly statistics about texting and driving.

texting while driving

  • 660,000. This is the number of drivers in the United States who are using their phones while driving at any given time during daylight hours.
  • 60%. The percentage of drivers who use their phones in any capacity while driving.
  • 88%. The percentage of young Americans who fear other drivers—this number is higher than the fear of public speaking, death, spiders, and snakes.
  • 5 seconds. How long your eyes are off the road while sending a texting—this translates to the length of a football field when driving 55 mph.
  • The number of people killed every day in accidents caused by distracted drivers.
  • You are three times more likely to get into an accident if you text while driving.

If you or someone you know has problems with texting and driving, consider turning your car into a phone-free zone. Put your phone and everyone else’s into the glove compartment or other storage bin where it is out of reach. Also try turning your phone off so you aren’t distracted by any notifications.
