Typically, many of the design concepts that stem from the Mazda Motor Corporation have a four-cylinder engine carried by four wheels that can “zoom zoom” to anywhere you want to go. That is, until now. Recently revealed on the eve of the, “Mazda Design: The Car as Art” in Milan, Italy, the car company revealed two new design concepts: a bicycle and a sofa.
Stemming from Mazda’s “KODO – Soul of Motion” design philosophy – that design is a method of creating an emotional bond between car and driver, the two non-automobile design concepts contain the flowing lines of the Mazda3, Mazda6, and CX-9 intended to emulate the appearance of motion even though the objects are at rest.
The Mazda bike concept, called “Bike by KODO concept,” is made from a single sheet of steel with a red crossbar and black leather seat accented by the same red thread and stitch pattern from the interior of the Mazda MX-5.
The “Sofa by KODO” also reflects the simple design elegance found in the bike concept made from a polished aluminum frame with a hint of red along the middle. According to the Mazda press release, the couch “evokes the strong stance common to all of Mazda’s new-generation vehicles.”

Mazda Foundation USA is supporting After-School All-Stars (ASAS) in their mission to provide “programs that keep children safe and help them succeed in school and life.” In its role, Mazda partnered with Project Yellow Light to help ASAS Atlanta Youth to put on “Super Saturday Service Day,” which was held last Saturday, April 4th.
“Super Saturday Service Day” is an event similar to a carnival, where participating students perform skits, poems, speeches and dances to illustrate the threat distracted driving poses in our communities. More than 1,500 students and members of the Atlanta community attended the Service Day event.
“These students bring such creative approaches to spread the message that distracted driving is a serious community concern,” said Tamara Mlynarczyk, Manager, Public Affairs, Mazda North American Operations in a statement. “From ‘Super Saturday Service Day’ here in Atlanta to rallies, social media campaigns and parent engagement nights, ASAS Youth Advisory Board Members mobilized their peers and demonstrated incredible social responsibility. The Mazda Foundation is proud to support these young civic leaders.”
The “Super Saturday Service Day” is just one of nine events that ASAS will organize in an effort to educate communities nation-wide on the dangers of distracted driving.
