Could A Rotary-Powered Mazda Sports Car Be Coming Your Way?

There’s a whole lot of buzz about a rotary-powered Mazda sports car going into production, and we might see it by 2017. The car will be the successor to the infamous RX-7 and RX-8, and include a rotary engine.

An Auto Express reports states the rotary-powered Mazda will be based on an extended and reinforced variant of the upcoming fourth-generation Mazda MX-5 Miata’s chassis.

Unlike this traditional engine pictured above, rotary engines are usually designed with an odd number of cylinders per row in a radial configuration, in which the crankshaft remained stationary, with the entire crankcase and its attached cylinders rotating around it as a unit in operation. – wikipedia

According to motortrend.com, “While Mazda is the only manufacturer to actively pursue Felix Wankel’s rotary design, the automaker has its work cut out to find solutions to the engine’s inherent flaws of high fuel and oil consumption and low torque output. The new engine is said to be being developed with the automaker’s Skyactiv approach to efficiency used on its piston engines such as natural aspiration, weight reduction, and high compression ratios.”

You can find plenty of speculations about possible design, horsepower capability, and transmission choice, but the truth is, we really won’t know until Mazda introduces the car – and it looks like they’ve got their work cut out in order to bring all elements of this unique sports car to work together.

We can’t wait to hear more about the possible rotary-powered sports car, what about you?

In the meantime, stop by Bakersfield Mazda! We’d love to say hello, and if you’re in the market for a great car, we’ve got a few of those too.

Mazda Educates Students on Racing Technology with R.A.C.E.

When you think about motorsport racing, you probably just think about pure speed and horsepower, but of course, there is a lot more that goes into building a successful race car. In Mazda’s new “Racing Accelerates Creative Education” or R.A.C.E. program, it will reach out to students across the country to show them how science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) all play a pivotal role in the success of Mazda Racing.

The in-school events will coincide with the 2014 Tudor United SportsCar Championship schedule, which Mazda is racing in this year. One of the last events for this school year was at Martin Luther King Jr. Senior High School in Detroit, Michigan. More than 700 students from 11 Detroit Public Schools met together to explore the world of racing technology.

John Doonan, Director, Mazda Motorsports, said in a statement, “Whether the students have already expressed an interest in STEM or not, we are convinced that our R.A.C.E. program will demonstrate in an interesting, fun and engaging way how science, technology, engineering and mathematics are central to the success of Mazda on the race track and in the marketplace. More important, by showing them examples of how exciting problem solving can be in the STEM arena, we believe students will be even more motivated to always be curious and open minded.”

Mazda will bring its SKYACTIV-D Clean Diesel prototype race car along with select professional drivers to showcase the events. The program’s next stop will be Eastdale Collegiate and Vocational Institute in Toronto, Ontario.
